Seven Sisters & Letter to Tatiana

Both as a diptych c-type prints with text and as a small booklet.

A photographic image is often “taken again”, small changes and adjustments are done both in the making of an image and during the printing process. In this work the time span between when the images are made is unclear, it could be one night or many days. The shift from one image to the next creates a gap for a possible story, a possible loophole, where the experience of time is different.

At the time when making these images I had email contact with a woman called Tatiana. Our short conversation is now printed on a letter-sized paper, folded and enclosed between the images.

The "Seven Sisters" is the English name given to a group of Moscow skyscrapers designed in the Stalinist style.

Subject: Relatives?

Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2006 10:39:45 -0400

Dear Mari,

You don't know me, but I saw an internet site that referred to your visit to St. Petersburg, Russia -- http://www.nifca.org/2006/gallery/lagerquist.html -- where I got you email. I have a question to you: did you have relatives who lived in the end of the 19th - the 1st quarter of the 20th century in St. Petersburg? If you had such relatives, I would be grateful if you could answer me what their names were. It could be that we are related.

Thank you very much, Tatiana

Dear Tatiana.

Thanks for the email. Unfortunately I have to say that no relative that is known to me has been to Russia, I'm the only one. Lagerquist is not a common name thought not completely obscure either so we could have been relatives, that would have been exiting!

Sorry.

All the best / mari

Dear Mari,

Thanks for your reply. I agree that Lagerquist is not an obscure name. I was intrigued by your name rather than others' because Mari is a French forename and my grandmother was three quarters French and one quarter Swedish. If any of male Lagerquists lived in France in the 1920-s, could it be that you don't know of his Russian past?

I beg your pardon for taking your time.

Regards, Tatiana

Dear Tatiana.

Actually I'm in Russia at the moment, in the countryside! On Friday

I'm going to St. Petersburg and will stay until Monday. I wonder if you would like to meet up for a cup of coffee? I would like to hear more about your search for relatives. I cannot check my emails again until Saturday morning so if you would like to meet up briefly then Sunday I think would suit me best. Let me know what your plans are -if you like to meet.

Kind regards, mari

Dear Mari,

Unfortunately, I cannot meet with you because I do not live in Russia now.

Best regards, Tatiana

Dear Tatiana.

You probably don't remember my name but ages ago you emailed me in a search for relatives. Today I went trough my inbox and found your letter far down. It just made me really curious, have you found any relatives yet? You don't live in Russia anymore, where do you live now? It might sound very intrusive, I apologies, but my curiosity wins.

It would be very interesting to hear from you though I very much understands of you don't want to answer.

In any case, all the best and kind regards / mari
